Compress the Size of Your MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access Documents

Document Press is a tiny portable utility tool that is produced by the developers of 7-Zip.It basically does the job of condensing down the size of documents in order to save space or memory.
It is formulated to compress , MS-Word, MS and Access Files that is a substitute for some generic software which didn’t serve the compression purpose that effectively.
Although it was created back in 1999, its version still being 1.0 has not been modified since then. Surprisingly, a decade old creation is still not outdated as it works for Office 2010 as well. With reference to it older user’s manual, is for suitable for .doc, .xls, .ppt, and some more document formats only. But it was observed that it had support for .docx and .xlsx too.
One can either choose to process all non-removable drives in the main interface.
  • When complete, enter either wildcards or enable ‘All files’ option to include all supported formats.
  • It presents two compression modes- Recursive and Estimate. Select 1 mode and click ‘Start ‘ to compress the files accordingly.
A compound file has a feature to save extra intrinsically, or in other words, its size is essentially larger on disk than presumed. This happens since the size of a file depends upon the amount of space between first and last sectors used by that file. The job of Document press lies here. It re-organises file content and burns out the dead space.
A compound file is one that is created when numerous small individual files are bound together as a single physical file. Most programs write data to compound files. In simple words, Document Press reduces the file size by eliminating dead space, without any loss of data.
Around a 100 files can be compressed in 4-5 sec’s. Relative time taken is proportional to the no of documents taken at a time. This window illustrates the Compression ratio, no of bytes before and after compression, total bytes reduced etc.
Learning more:
  • It comes with a command line tool, which can help you to understand how it it works. Read the DocPress User Manual contained in the same folder as Document Press.

  • It supports all version of Windows (32-bit only), although it was tested on Windows7 x86 system
